St. Matthew's was founded in 1898, at the beginning of residential settlement in the district of Ottawa known as "the Glebe". By 1927, it was evident that the congregation had outgrown its little wooden church. The present building and parish hall were erected in 1930, just west of the old church. The church is constructed on the orthodox cruciform plan with a modified English Gothic interior. The stone is Indiana limestone and its roof is slate.
The small apartment building to the east and five town houses were built with the same stone saved from the demolition of the parish hall in 1997. St. Matthew's has always played a significant part in the life of the Anglican community in the Ottawa valley. From 1910 to 1945, it was the largest parish in the Diocese.
The Organ
One of Ottawa's largest instruments, some of the pipework of the organ dates back to the original church building and the Casavant Frères organ built in 1909. This original instrument was moved to the new church building and enlarged by Casavant in 1931.
In 1957, the London (England) firm of Hill, Norman & Beard was commissionned to expand the resources of the organ, adding, amongst other things, a new console, a horizontal solo trumpet, and a positiv division.
Restoration and rebuilding of the organ were carried out in 2001-2003 by Alain Baumgarten of Orgues Baumgarten. The project included rebuilding the console and windchests, releathering, and tonal additions.
Organ pipework is located on the right side of the chancel above the vestry while the console, installed on a movable platform, is located on the left side of the chancel.
