L'église

En janvier 1943, l'église anglicane St. George's on-the-Hill, de Islington, inaugure une école confessionnelle dans l'école Sunnylea. à l'intérieur d'une année, la mission Sunnylea de la paroisse St. George est formée, elle sera plus tard renommé All Saints' Kingsway. Le premier service religieux a été célébré dans l'école Sunnylea le 16 janvier 1944.

à l'invitation du Très Révérend A.R. Beverley, évêque suffragant de Toronto, le Révérend Arnold Wilkinson devient le premier pasteur. L'école Sunnylea demeure, pour encore trois ans, le centre de la nouvelle paroisse.

Les débuts de la construction de l'église sont marqués par beaucoup d'impatience. Celle-ci se met en marche avec la cérémonie de la première pelletée de terre par l'évêque Beverley le 1er mars 1947. Peu de temps après, le 8 octobre 1847, le premier service religieux est célébré dans la crypte de l'édifice. Plus tard, le 14 avril 1951, l'évêque Beverley pose la pierre angulaire et le service de dédicace de la nef et du sanctuaire se tient le 15 mai 1952. L'église sera inaugurée le 2 mai 1957.

Le 7 septembre 1966, l'église est détruite par le feu. Immédiatement tous les paroissiens s'unissent afin de restaurer l'édifice. Un an après, jour pour jour, l'église restaurée est inaugurée par l'évêque George Snell, de Toronto. Elle sera consacrée le 16 janvier 1969.

L'orgue

En 1960, la paroisse installe un superbe orgue Casavant (Opus 2589, 59 jeux répartis sur 3 claviers manuels et pédalier) qui fut inauguré le 6 octobre. En janvier 1962, le célèbre pianiste canadien Glenn Gould a enregistré, sur cet instrument, le premier volume de l'Art de la Fugue de Bach. Le volume 2 ne paraîtra jamais. La compagnie Columbia Records avait envoyé une équipe technique et tout l'équipement nécessaire pour réaliser cet enregistrement. Cet instrument était d'une conception très moderne mais il a été détruit lors du feu du 7 septembre 1966. Il a été remplacé, deux ans plus tard, par un orgue produit par la firme Hallman.

À la suite de la réception d'un généreux don, il fut décidé de remplacer l'orgue Hallman après plus de 40 ans de loyaux services. Toutefois, il sera restauré et installé dans l'église unie St. Paul, de Midland, ON.

Le nouvel instrument, construit par Casavant, est l'un des plus impressionnant à être construit au Canada au cours des dernières années et ce, à un coût de 1,5 million $. La première utilisation officielle de l'instrument fut lors d'un office du soir (evensong) le 19 avril 2009 auquel participait le choeur Amadeus dirigé par sa directrice, Lydia Adams. Le premier concert d'orgue quant à lui a été donné par Felix Hell le 24 mai 2009.

The Church

In January 1943, St. George’s on-the-Hill Anglican Church, Islington, began a Church School in Sunnylea School. Within a year the new parish of St. George’s Sunnylea Mission was formed, later to be renamed All Saints’ Church, Kingsway. The first service was held in Sunnylea School on January 16th, 1944.

On August 1st, 1944, upon the invitation of the Rt. Rev. A.R. Beverley, Suffragan Bishop of Toronto, the Rev. Arnold Wilkinson became the first Priest-in-Charge. Sunnylea School remained the home for All Saints’ for the next three years.

With great anticipation the building of the church began. Bishop Beverley turned the sod to commence the building on March 1, 1947. Shortly after, on October 8th, 1947, the first service was held in the basement of the building. Later, on April 14th, 1951, Bishop Beverley laid the corner stone and on May 15, 1952, he conducted the Service of Dedication for the Nave and Chancel. The completed church was dedicated on May 2, 1957.

On September 7th, 1966, the church was gutted by fire. Immediately the whole congregation united to restore the building. On September 7th, 1967, the restored church was dedicated by Bishop George Snell, of Toronto. It was consecrated on January 16th, 1969.

The Organ

In 1960, the church installed a superb Casavant organ (Opus 2589, 59 stops over 3 manuals and pedal) which was dedicated on October 6th. In January 1962, celebrated Canadian pianist Glenn Gould recorded, on this instrument, the first volume of The Art of the Fugue by Bach. Volume 2 never appeared. Columbia Records sent a crew and the necessary equipment down to make that recording. The organ was a very advanced design but was destroyed by fire on September 7th, 1966. It was replaced by a Hallman organ two years later.

Following the receipt of generous gift, it was decided to replace the Hallman organ after more than 40 years of service. However, it will be restored and installed in St. Paul's United Church, in Midland, ON.

The new instrument, built by Casavant, is one of the most impressive to be built in Canada in recent years at a cost of $1.5 million. The first official musical event to feature the new organ was a choral evensong on April 19, 2009 featuring the Amadeus Choir and their director, Lydia Adams. On May 24, Felix Hell gave the first major solo recital on the organ.
