L'orgue

Le plus ancien orgue historique du Manitoba, un instrument de 16 jeux répartis sur 2 claviers manuels et pédale, construit en 1850 par le facteur américain George Stevens, a été installé à la tribune arrière de l'église Gloria Dei, de Winnipeg, en 1977. L'histoire de cet instrument avant 1894 est inconnue mais à partir de cette date et jusqu'en 1973, il a été installé dans l'église Universalist de Rumford (Maine). Le facteur John Shortridge, de Rockport (Maine) acheta l'instrument et le mit en vente en utilisant les services de « Organ Clearing House »

Quand cette communauté de banlieue construisit sa nouvelle église en 1977, certains membres de cette communauté voulaient acheter un instrument électronique mais le recteur du temps, un américain qui s'intéressait à la musique religieuse et aux orgues, et qui connaissait les débouchés aux États-Unis où il était possible d'obtenir des orgues à tuyaux usagés, influença la décision de la communauté dans cette direction. Quelques membres de la communauté récupérèrent l'orgue de son site dans le Maine, le transportèrent à Winnipeg, le montèrent et assurèrent son entretien jusqu'à ce qu'un technicien local en prenne charge. L'orgue Stevens resta intact et non modifié quant à sa structure tonale conservatrice jusqu'à ce qu'il soit « mis à la retraite » à l'âge vénérable de 153 ans et remplacé par l'instrument actuel, construit par Casavant Frères, et installé en janvier 2003.

The Organ

The oldest historic organ in Manitoba, a two-manual, 16-stop instrument made by the American builder George Stevens in 1850, was installed in the gallery of Gloria Dei Church, Winnipeg, in 1977. The early history of the organ up to 1894 is unknown, but from that date until 1973 it resided in the Universalist Church, Rumford, Maine. John Shortridge, an organ builder in Rockport, Maine, purchased the instrument and later offered it for sale through the Organ Clearing House.

When this suburban congregation erected its new church building in 1977, some members of the congregation wanted an electronic instrument, but the pastor at the time, an American who was interested in church music and organs, knew the sources in the United States where used pipe organs could be obtained, and influenced the congregation in that direction. Some of the men of the congregation retrieved the organ from its location in Maine, transported it to Winnipeg, set it up, and maintained it until a local organ technician took over its care. The Stevens organ remained intact and unaltered in its conservative tonal disposition until it was "retired" at the age of 153 and replaced by the actual Casavant instrument in January 2003.
