St Matthew Church began as a mission of St Mark Church, with the first service conducted in a public schoolhouse on May 14th, 1876. A Sunday School was organized two years later. A frame Gothic church was in use at Livingston and Broadway (then known as Forest Avenue) in 1883. Mission status had been granted the previous May; parish status was granted in 1914.
In 1906, the congregation moved with the 1883 church to the present site. A former stationhouse of the Chicago & Northwestern railway was used as a parish house. A new Gothic church building with stucco exterior was erected in 1920. Part of the church plant was demolished in 1949 to make way for an enlarged church and chapel the following year.
The Organs
The Sanctuary Organ
The present organ was built in 1977 by Casavant Frères, of St Hyacinthe (Quebec), as their opus 3354, under the tonal direction of Gerhard Brunzema. The sanctuary of the church was reconfigured at that time with the organ placed at the rear wall and the altar, reredos, and railing in front of it.
The Chapel Organ
The exquisite, yet intimate, St Mary Chapel was built in 1950 and 1951 and provides an excellent acoustic for the one-manual, mechanical key and stop action instrument built in 1989 by the Bradford Organ Company, of Evanston, for the gallery at the rear. Each manual rank is divided with the treble section beginning at middle C. Space is provided for the eventual installation of a 16' Pedal stop. The case is of quater-sawn oak, while the keydesk is of walnut.
