Arbois is a commune in the Jura department in eastern France. As part of the Duchy of Burgundy, Arbois endured seven sieges, including sackings by Charles I d'Amboise in 1479, Henry IV when the town held out for three weeks against the King's 25,000 troops, and Louis XIV.
In 1834 when the republic was proclaimed at Lyons, the town joined the revolt against the government, which promptly sent a small force of grenadiers, cavalry, and a battery of artillery to subdue it.
The church
The construction of this church goes back to the 12th century and its superb nave, vaulted a century later, dates from its origin. The typically franc-comtois bell tower was built with ochre calcareous stone in the 16th century. Dominating the city, the steeple houses an 11-bell carillon dating from 1738 and among which one of them is the biggest bell in the Jura department. It was incidentally damaged by fireworks in 1651 and its height was considerably reduced. In one of the lateral chapels, there is the painting depiting an ecstasy of St. There of Avila, painted in the 18th century by Brandon, of Lyons, as well as a sculpture of the Virgin with a silver flower dating from 1380.
The Organ
Built by Martin Carouge in 1728 in a finely sculpted organcase executed by Lambertoz, this instrument is originally installed in Notre-Dame church in Arbois. At the Revolution, in 1795, it is transferred in St. Just church.
In 1854, the instrument est restored by organbuilder Ducroquet.
The instrument is classified as an "Historical monument" on October 19th, 1976.
Its reconstruction executed in 1984-85 by organbuilder Bernard Aubertin and cabinetmaker Claude Primot brought back to this historical instrument all its brightness.
