Les débuts de la paroisse St. John the Baptist furent très humbles. En effet, un petit nombre de catholiques parmi les premiers habitants de Burlington recevaient la visite de prêtres missionnaires qui venaient occasionnellement célébrer l'Eucharistie dans des résidences privées. Plusieurs prêtres, dont la plupart vinrent à dos de cheval ou en charrette, s'occupèrent du groupe qui fut constitué en mission en 1849. Toutes les archives de la paroisse avant 1925 sont conservées à la paroisse St. Andrew, d'Oakville.
La famille Ogg, de Burlington, fit don d'un terrain et, en 1861, une petite chapelle fut construite au coin des rues Pearl et Pine. Au début, cette structure consistait en peu de choses : un plancher nu, un poêle à bois et des madriers servant de bancs. Quelque temps plus tard, le tout fut amélioré par l'addition d'un sous-sol et d'une fournaise puis vinrent l'électricité et l'eau courante.
St. John the Baptist devint une paroisse en 1925 et son premier curé, l'abbé Daniel A. Ford, y resta pendant vingt ans. Le 25 octobre 1945, un incendie se déclara dans l'église détruisant complètement le choeur. Toutefois, la paroisse célébra son centenaire dans cette église le 11 juin 1950.
En 1951, la décision fut prise de construire une nouvelle église afin d'accommoder la rapide croissance de la population. Une nouvelle église fut bénie le 17 mai 1953 par Mgr. Joseph Francis Ryan, évêque de Hamilton.
Saint John the Baptist parish had very humble beginnings when a small number of Catholics among the early settlers in Burlington had travelling priests come to celebrate the Eucharist in private homes. St. John's was later founded as a mission in 1849 and, in its early days, was served by a number of priests, most of whom came on horseback or horse and buggy. Parish records prior to 1925 are kept at St. Andrew's in Oakville.
The Ogg family of Burlington donated land, and, in 1861, a small rough church was built at the corner of Pearl and Pine Streets. This structure was not much in the beginning - bare ground, a wood stove and rough boards as pews. It was later improved upon by the addition of a basement and furnace and soon electricity and running water were in place.
St. John's officially became a parish in 1925 and the first pastor was Fr. Daniel A. Ford who remained pastor for twenty years. On October 25th, 1945, a fire had broken out in the church, completely gutting the sanctuary. However, the parish celebrated its 100th anniversary there on June 11th, 1950.
In 1951, it was decided that a new church be built in order to handle the rapid growth in population. A new church building was consecrated on May 17th, 1953 by Bishop Joseph Francis Ryan, of Hamnilton.
