L'église

L'église Saint-Michel est un édifice de style roman primitif. Il est inscrit au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO depuis 1985. L'église principale est utilisée pour le culte luthérien alors que le culte catholique romain utilise la crypte.

Historique

En 993, Bernward de Hildesheim (v960-1022) est élu en tant que treizième évêque de Hildesheim. La même année, il reçoit, en cadeau d'Otto III (980-1002), roi d'Allemagne et empereur du saint empire romain, une relique de la vraie croix. Sur une colline, à environ un demi kilomètre au nord de la cathédrale, il fait bâtir une chapelle qu'il dédie à la Sainte-Croix pour y loger la relique. Il consacre cette chapelle le 10 septembre 996. Juxtaposant cette chapelle, il fait construire un monastère bénédictin qu'il dédie à l'archange Michel. Les recherches indiquent qu'en plus d'avoir conçu les plans de l'édifice, il fut aussi responsable pour sa construction. Bernward dépose la première pierre de la nouvelle église en 1010. Pour cette église, il commande différentes oeuvres telles les fameuses portes de bronze (réalisées en 1015) et une grande colonne de bronze (réalisée entre 1015-1020) qui était probablement destinée à porter le cierge pascal. Ces deux oeuvres se trouvement maintenant dans la cathédrale de Hildesheim. Les portes présentes, en relief, des scènes de la bible. La porte de gauche montre des scènes du livre de la Genèse alors que celle de droite montre des scènes de la vie de Jésus. Elles sont considérées comme un chef d'oeuvre de l'art ottoman, car elles présentent les plus anciennes illustrations de l'histoire de la sculpture allemande et la plus ancienne collection d'images réalisées dans le métal. Bernward choisit la crypte de l'ouest comme lieu de sa sépulture et comme son lieu privilégié pour la prière. Il consacre la ctypte le 29 septembre 1015. Il décède le 20 novembre 1022, quelques semaines après avoir inauguré l'église encore non complètement terminée en la fête de saint Michel, le 29 septembre 1022. Tel que demandé, ses restes sont placés dans la crypte ouest. Il est canonisé par le pape Célestin III le 21 décembre 1193 mais sa publication officielle date du 10 janvier 1194.

La construction de l'église se poursuit sous son successeur, l'évêque Godehard (mort en 1038) et se termine avec une nouvelle consécration qui a lieu le 29 septembre 1031. L'édifice possède deux choeurs, l'un à l'est et l'autre à l'ouest, deux transepts placés aux extrémités de la nef, et six tours, deux grandes au-dessus de la croisée des transepts est et ouest, et quatre autres, hautes et élancées, attachés aux deux transepts. Le choeur de l'est présente trois absides tandis que celle de l'ouest présente une profonde chapelle avec une haute abside qui s'élève au-dessus d'une crypte et un déambulatoire. Le monastère comprend alors, en plus de cette église, deux autres sanctuaires, l'un dédié à saint Martin et l'autre à la Sainte-Croix qui s'étend de la partie nord du cloître au côté nord de l'église.

Un premier incendie survient en 1034 et, après réparations, l'église est réinaugurée en 1035. Les chapiteaux des colonnes sont réalisés entre 1171 et 1190. En 1186, une reconstruction à la suite d'un second incendie, Adelog de Dorstedt (mort en 1190), évêque de Hildesheim depuis 1171, assisté du prince-évêque Tammo (mort en 1188), de Verden, reconsacre l'église. Les reliefs en stucco de la rampe du choeur d'anges, que l'on retrouve à l'entrée, origine de la crypte et ont été réalisés de 1194 à 1197. Le décor peint de la voûte date d'autour 1230. En 1250, le cloître est reconstruit joignant l'église avec la chapelle du vieux cloître laquelle a été utilisée avant la construction de l'église.

Lorsque la Réforme s'installe, l'église devient, le 12 novembre 1542, une église paroissiale protestante-luthérienne. Toutefois, le monastère bénédiction poursuit son existence jusqu'à sa sécularisation en 1803 et le culte catholique utilise le choeur de l'ouest ainsi que la crypte pour ses célébrations. Aujourd'hui, la crypte est toujours de rite catholique.

En 1650, l'abside est doit être démolie vu son état en décripitude entraînant l'effondrement du transept de l'est et la destruction partielle du décor peint de la voûte. Douze ans plus tard, le transept ouest doit être démoli; la rampe sud du choeur d'anges est détruite. La tour de l'est est reconstruite en 1672 et reçoit un nouveau toit baroque.

En 1809, l'église est fermée et le monastère est converti en hôpital. Les services religieux sont transférés en l'église Saint-Martin (aujourd'hui, partie intégrante de Musée Roemer et Pelizaeus). Après une première restauration, de 1855 à 1857, sous la direction de Conrad Wilhelm Hase (1838-1902), les services religieux retournent à Saint-Michel. Des équipements liturgiques sont rapportées de l'église Siant-Martin: les fonts baptismaux en bronze de 1618, le retable de l'autel Saint-Jean datant de 1520 ainsi que l'épitaphe Bothmer du XVIIe siècle; ces items sont tous encore dans l'église.

Au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'église est endommagée par les raids aériens contre la ville de Hildesheim les 2 février, 3 mars et 14 mars 1945, mais elle est détruite par des bombes explosives et incendiaires lors du dernier raid contre la ville le 22 mars 1945. Le décar print de la voûte et d'autres trésors, retirés à l'initiative de Hermann Deckert, ont pu ainsi être sauvés. La rampe du choeur d'anges, enveloppé dans un mur de protection, n'a pas été endommagé. À la fin de la guerre, l'église est reonstruite à partir de 1947 sur les reste pré-romans et selon les plans originaux. La réinauguration de la nef et du transept ouest a eu lieu le 20 aoûts 1950. Tous les travaux de construction sont terminés en 1960.

De 2005 à 1020, l'intérieur a été complètement restauré incluant des recherches archéologiques qui se sont déroulées de février à juin 2006. Au cours de ces travaux, le plancher est abaissé de 15 à 18 centimètres (6 à 7 pouces) de sorte que l'église et la crypte ont retrouvé leur niveau égal d'origine et communiquent entre elles par deux points. Les catholiques et les protestants utilisent une sacristie jouxtant la crypte et à l'intérieur d'un espace oecuménique. En décembre 2008, l'artiste Thomas Duttenhoefer a installé un crucifix, un autel, une chaire et un ambon ainsi que des fonts baptismaux en 2010.

Architecture

L'église Saint-Michel est l'un des plus importantes églises émanant du début de l'architecture chrétienne. Elle est une basilique à deux choeurs avec deux transepts surmontés chacun d'une tour carrée. Le choeur occidental se démarque avec son déambulatoire et sa crypte.

Le plan au sol de l'édifice adopte un concept géométrique dans lequel le carré de la croisée du transept constitue la mesure de base pour l'église entière. Les unités carrées sont définies par l'alternance de colonnes et de piliers. Ce système représente un « système métrique plus complet » que ceux que l'on peut retrouver dans toute autre architecture romane antérieure.

L'édifice mesure 74,75 mètres (245 pieds) de long et chaque transept mesure 40 mètres (131 pieds) de long sur 11,38 mètres (37 pieds) de large. La nef mesure 16,7 mètres (55 pieds) de haut, 17,34 mètres (90 pieds) de long sur 22,75 mètres (75 pieds) de large incluant les bas-côtés et 8,4 mètres (28 pieds) sans ceux-ci. La crypte mesure 18,36 mètres (60 pieds) de long. Les murs ont une épaisseur de 1,63 mètres (5 pieds).

Le toit, avec ses 1 300 pièces de bois, est, avec celui de l'église Saint-Martin de Zillis (Suisse) et de Dädesjö (Suède), les seuls exemples encore existants d'une telle structure hautement vulnérable.

L'église possède un total de dix cloches réparties dans cinq tours, quatre d'entre elles sont les tours d'escalier et la dernière et la tour du transept oriental. La tout du nord comprend la cloche la plus pesante auivie de celles du sud-ouest et du sud-est avec trois cloches chacune, la tour de l'ouest avec deux cloches et enfin, celle de l'ouest avec une cloche. La plus ancienne cloche date de 1250 et provient d'une fonderie anonyme alors que les neuf autres, dans les quatre tours d'escalier, ont été produites entre 1950 et 1971 par le fondeur Friedrich Wilhelm Schilling.

Les trésors

La colonne du Christ

La colonne du Christ est un coulage ceux de bronze datant du premiers tiers du XIe siècle sur lequel appariassent 28 scènes tirées de la vie publique de Jésus. Jusqu'au XVIIe siècle, il était sous l'arc triomphal occidental de la croisée du transept oriental. Avec les transformations liées à l'adoption de la Réforme, cette colone perd son sens liturgique et est déménagée dans le transept sud-est réaménagé. Au cours du XIXe siècle, il est transféré dans la cathédrale Sainte-Marie de Hildesheim. De septembre 2009 à août 2014, pendant des travaux de restauration à la cathédrale, la colonne est revenue à l'église Saint-Michel dans le transept sud-est. La première scène - le baptême de Jésus au Jourdain - pointait vers le nord et, liturgiquement, dans la direction de l'autel situé dans la croisée orientale de même que vers les fonts baptismaux dans la transept nord-est.

La voûte

La voûte de l'église est décorée d'une fresque, exécutée vers 1130 et mesurant 27,6 mètres (90,5 pieds) de long sur 8,7 mètres (28,5 pieds) de large), illustrant l'arbre de Jessé, l'ancêtre du Christ. Elle a été créée probablement en même temps que l'agrandissement du choeur occidental au cours des années après 1200 sous l'abbatiat de Théodoric II. Nulle autre personnalité n'aurait été capable de faire réaliser ce chef-d'oeuvre. Toutefois, les recherches effectuées en 1999 sur les chênes utilisés, datent ceux-ci entre 1190 et 1220.

La voûte est démontée en 1943 et entreposée à différents endroits. Après l'effondrement du transept oriental, le bois substitué est demeuré dans l'église. Avant sa réinstallation en 1960, la fresque dans son ensemble a été nettoyée et a fait l'objet de restaurations.

La rampe du choeur des anges

La rampe du choeur nord (rampe du choeur des anges) à la croisée du transept nord devant le choeur occidental date de la période du Haut Moyen Âge. À l'origine, elle était située dans la crypte. Elle a été exécutée entre 1194 et 1197 après la canonisation de St. Bernwald avec l'agrandissement de la crypte et son lien avec le choeur. Sa contrepartie sud a été détruite en 1662. Les figurines sont de stucco. Cette technologie pour créer des sculptures et des reliefs était très répandue en Basse Saxe et avait atteint un haut niveau technique.

La partie supérieure présente 13 figures d'anges qui se détachent de la frise tout en étant à l'intérieur; certaines arborent des banderoles. En dessous, sept courbes représentent la Jérusalem céleste. À l'intérieur de celles-ci, des figures de saints : au centre, la Vierge Marie avec l'Enfant-Jésus, vers la droite, Pierre, Jacques et Benoît, cers la gauche, Paul, Jean et Bernward (avec l'église Saint-Michel dans ses mains). Les figurines ressortent de la surface du mur et deviennent presque entièrement à l'extérieur à certains endroits.

Le retable de l'autel Saint-Jean

Le retable de l'autel dans le choeur occidental date de vers 1520 et était, à l'origine, dans l'église Saint-Jean à la barrière du barrage. De là, à la Réforme, il est transféré dans l'église Saint-Martin, la chapelle de l'ancien monastère des Franciscains. Au milieu du XIXe siècle, l'église est profanée et devient le Musée Roemer et Pelizaeus. La municipalité le transfère, en 1857, à l'église Saint-Michel en y ajoutant l'autel peut-être en guise de substitut pour celui utilisé jusqu'à la sécularisation et qui a été transféré à un musée local. Ses panneaux contiennent des peintures: l'Annonciation (intérieur gauche), l'Adoration des mages (intérieur droit), le baptête de Jésus par Jean-Baptiste (extérieur gauche), et l'évangéliste Jean sur l'île de Patmos (extérieur droit).

Le retable est presque toujours ouvert. Il présentent sept saints dans des habits dorés. Au centre, la Vierge Marie avec l'Enfant-Jésus - d'où le concept d'une chapelle de la Vierge. Du côté gauche, l'évangéliste Jean avec la coupe et du côté droit, Jean-Baptiste avec le mouton. À l'intérieur du panneau gauche, il y a Barbara et Jacques et à l'intérieur du panneau droit, André et Élisabeth de Thüringen. Au dos des panneaux, il y a, du côté gauche, une peinture de la Visitation tandis que du côté droit, une peinture de la Nativité du Christ.

Les fonts baptismaux

Provenant du premiers tiers du XIIIe siècle, la cathédrale St. Mary's de Hildesheim possède des fonts baptismaux en bronze qui reposent sur quatre figurines d'homme versant de l'eau lesquels symbolisent les quatre rivières du paradis. Cette tradition se poursuit après l'introduction de la Réforme avec des fonts baptismaux réalisés dans un style typiquement protestant en 1547 pour l'église Saint-André. à Hildesheim et les environ, six travaux sont produits dont celui vers 1592 pour l'église catholique sainte-Croix. Le dernier de ces travaux est celui réalisé par Dietrich Mente en 1618 pour l'église Saint-Martin qui est, depuis 1857, dans l'église Saint-Michel, Ils sont placés dans la transept nord-ouest qui est utilisé comme baptistère.

Le bassin et son couvert présentent chacun six scènes bibliques. Les douze apôtres sont représentés sur deux rangées sur la hampe. La base est supportée par quatre chérubins qui rappellent les quatre verseurs d'eau des fonts baptismaux de la cathédrale. Des inscriptions identifient les fondeurs et les mouleurs alors qu'une cartouche sur le couvert rappelle que l'église Saint-Martin était la destination première. L'intérieur du couvert contient une représentation de la Trinité.

L'orgue

En 1958, l'église reçoit un orgue de 40 jeux répartis sur trois claviers et pédalier fabriqué par Paul Ott. Cet orgue est transféré à l'église Sainte-Élisabeth de Gera en 1998 où il a reçu un nouveau buffet inauguré en 2004.

L'orgue actuel a été construit en 1999 par le facteur Gerald Wohl, de Marburg. L'instrument se dresse auto-porteur dans le coin du bras sud du transept de l'ouest près de la rampe nord du choeur. Le buffet à quatre faces reprend la forme de base de l'édifice alors qu'il est un carré placé dans un coin.

La structure sonore a été développé pour permettre l'interprétation du vaste répertoire de l'orgue allant de Johann Sebastian Bach à la musique romantique allemande et à la musique symphonique française jusque vers la musique contemporaine. L'instrument possède 69 jeux répartis sur trois claviers et pédalier. La traction mécanique est utilisée pour les clavier ainsi que pour les accouplements alors que la taction est électrique pour les jeux. La tuyauterie du Grossbourdon 32' de la pédale est située en dehors du buffet; elle est disposée sur le premier plancher du choeur des anges dans le transept sud-ouest tandis que le carillon est suspendu au-dessus du plancher du choeur.

The Church

The Church of St. Michael is an early-Romanesque church. It has been on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list since 1985. It is now a shared church, the main church being Lutheran and the crypt being Roman Catholic.

History

In 993, Bishop Bernward of Hildesheim (c960–1022) was elected as the thirteenth bishop of Hildesheim. The same year, he received a particle of the true cross as a gift from Otto III (980-1002), King of Germany and Holy Roman emperor. On the hill, about half a kilometer to the north of the cathedral, he established a chapel dedicated to the Holy Cross to house the relic. He consecrated this chapel on September 10th, 996. Next to this chapel, he built a Benedictine monastery from the ground up which he dedicated to archangel Michael. Research shows that he was responsible for the building design but also for its construction. Bernward set the first stone for the new church in 1010 for which he commissioned several works, notably the famous bronze doors (cast 1015) and a great bronze column (c. 1015–1020), probably intended to support the paschal candle (both works are now in Hildesheim Cathedral). The doors show relief images from the Bible, scenes from the book of Genesis on the left door and from the life of Jesus on the right door. They are considered a masterpiece of Ottonian art, and feature the oldest known monumental image cycle in German sculpture, and also the oldest cycle of images cast in metal in Germany. Bernward determined the west crypt of this church for his place of burial and a place of constant prayer for him. He consecrated the crypt on September 29th, 1015. Bernward died on November 20th, 1022, a few weeks after he dedicated the still unfinished church on St. Michael's feast day, September 29th 1022. As requested, his remains were placed in the western crypt and he was canonized by Pope Celestine III on December 21st, 1193, but was officially published on January 10th, 1194.

Construction of the church, however, continued under his successor, Bishop Godehard (died 1038), who completed the work in 1031 and reconsecrated the church to St. Michael on September 29th of that year. The church has double choirs east and west, double tripartite transepts at either end of the nave, and six towers, two large ones over the east and west crossings, and four other tall and narrow ones attached to the small sides of the two transepts. The eastern choir featured three apses, and the west had a deep chapel with a single huge apse rising high over an elaborate cross-vaulted hall crypt with an ambulatory. The monastery included this church and two other sanctuaries, one dedicated to St. Martin and the other to the Holy Cross lying in the cloister that extended northward from St. Michael's north side.

A first fire occurred in 1034 and, after repairs, it was reinaugurated in 1035. The column capitals were created between 1171 and 1190. In 1186, following a reconstruction after a second fire, Adelog of Dorstedt (died 1190) who was bishop of Hildesheim since 1171, assisted by Prince-Bishop Tammo (died 1188), of Verden, reconsecrated the church. The stucco reliefs of the angel choir railing at the entrance originated in the crypt from 1194 to 1197. The painted wooden vault originated around 1230. In 1250, the cloister was rebuilt connecting the church with the old cloister chapel which was used before the construction of the church.

When the Reformation was introduced, the church became, on November 12th, 1542, a Protestant-Lutheran parish church. Nevertheless, the Benedictine monastery continued to operate up until its secularization in 1803 and used the church's western choir and crypt for the service. The crypt is still Catholic today.

In 1650, the east apse was demolished because of its dilapidated condition what led to the collapse of the eastern transept and the partial destruction of the painted vault. Twelve years later, the western transept had to be demolished; besides, the southern angel choir railing was destroyed. The east tower was rebuilt and received in 1672 a baroque cover.

In 1809, the church was closed and the monastery was used as a hospital. The religious services moved in St. Martin Church (today, part of the Roman and Pelizaeus Museum). After basic renovation, from 1855 to 1857, under the supervision of Conrad Wilhelm Hase (1818-1902), the religious services to St. Michael's. Furnishings from St. Martin's Church were brought: the 1618 bronze baptismal font, the 1520 St. John's altar reredos and the 17th-century Bothmer epitaph; they all are still in the church.

In the Second World War, the church was damaged by air raids on Hildesheim on February 22nd, March 3rd, and March 14th, 1945, but was destroyed with the last air raid on the town on March 22nd, 1945, by explosive and incendiary bombs. The painted vault and the other art treasures had been evacuated on Hermann Deckert's initiative and remained undamaged. The angel choir railing had been protected by a protective wall, so that it was not damaged. After the end of the war, the church was rebuilt from 1947 on the preromanesque rests following the original plans. The reinauguration of the nave and the western transept took place on August 20th, 1950. Works were finally completed in 1960.

From 2005 to 2010, the interior was completely restored and included archeological investigations which were carried out from February to June 2006. In these works, the floor was lowered by about 6 to 7 inches (15 to 18 cm). Now, the church and the crypt have the original uniform level again and are connected again by two passageways with each other. The Catholics and the Protestants use a sacristy bordering the crypt and within an ecumenical space. In December 2008, artist Thomas Duttenhoefer installed a crucifix, an altar, a pulpit and a lectern). In 2010, he installed a baptismal font.

Architecture

St. Michael's Church is one of the most important churches of early Christian period architecture. It is a double-choir basilica with two transepts and a square tower at each crossing. The west choir is emphasized by an ambulatory and a crypt.

The ground plan of the building follows a geometrical conception, in which the square of the transept crossing in the ground plan constitutes the key measuring unit for the entire church. The square units are defined by the alternation of columns and piers. This system is a "more thorough metrical system" than found in any prior Romanesque architecture.

The building is 245 feet (74.75 meters) long and each transept is 131 feet (40 meters) long by 37 feet (11.38 meters) wide. The nave is 55 feet (16.7 meters) high, 90 feet (27.34 meters) long and 75 feet (22.75 meters) wide including the side aisles and 28 feet (8.6 meters) without them. The crypt is 60 feet (18.36 meters) long. The walls are 5 feet (1.63 meters) thick.

The roof is, with its 1,300 pieces of wood, along with that of St. Martin Church in Zillis (Switzerland) and Dädesjö (Sweden), the only remaining examples of such an extremely vulnerable structure.

The church owns a total of ten bells spread over five towers, four of which are stair towers and the last one is the eastern transept tower. The northern tower houses the heaviest bell, followed by the southwestern and the southeastern ones with three bells each, the northeastern one with two bells and the western one with a single bell. The oldest bell dates from 1250 and comes from an anonymous caster while the remaining nine bells (in the four stair towers) were cast between 1950 and 1971 by bell caster Friedrich Wilhelm Schilling.

The Treasures

The Christ's Column

The Christ's column is a bronze hollow casting from the first third of the 11th century on which the public life of Jesus Christ is shown in 28 scenes. Till the 17th century, it stood under the western triumphal curve of the eastern crossing. With the transformations linked to the Reformation, it lost its liturgical meaning and was brought in the reshaped southeast transept. In the 19th century, it was transferred to the Hildesheim St. Mary's Cathedral. From September 2009 to August 2014, it stood, for the duration of the cathedral renovation, again in St. Michael in the southeast transept. The first scene – the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan - pointed to the north and, liturgically, in the direction of the altar located in the east crossing as well as to the baptismal font put up in the northeast transept.

The Vault

The church vault is decorated with a fresco, executed around 1130 and measuring 90.5 feet (27.6 meters) long and 28.5 feet (8.7 meters) wide, depicting the Tree of Jesse, the ancestral line of Jesus. It was presumably executed at the same time as the west choir extensions during the years after 1200 when Theoderic II was the Abbott. No other personality would have been able of such achievements. Nevertheless, investigations on the oaks used carried out in 1999 date them between 1190 and 1220.

The vault was taken down in 1943 and stored at different places. After the collapse of the eastern transept, the substituted boards remained in the church. Before the reinstallation in 1960, all parts of the painting have been carefully cleaned and have been restored.

The Angels' Choir Railing

The northern choir railing (angels' choir railing) in the transept crossing before the western choir date from the High Middle Ages. Originally, it was located in the crypt. It was executed between 1194 and 1197 after St. Bernward's canonization with the extension of the crypt and its link with the high choir. The southern counterpart was destroyed in 1662. The figures are made of stucco. This technology for the creation of sculptures and reliefs was widely spread in Lower Saxony and was developed to highly technical skill.

The upper part shows 13 angel figures standing from the frieze while being on the inside; some carry banners. Below, seven curves represent heavenly Jerusalem. In them saints figures, in the middle stand Mary with the Child Jesus, to the right (east) Peter, James and Benedict, to the left the (west) Paul, John and Bernward (with St. Michael's Church in the hand). The figures strongly come out from the wall surface and become almost full round at some places.

St. John's Altar Reredos

The reredos on the high choir in the west originated around 1520 and was put up originally in St. John's Church at the dam gate. From there, at the Reformation, it was transferred in St. Martin's Church, the former Franciscan cloister chapel. At the middle of the 19th century, the church was profaned and became the actual Roman and Pelizaeus Museum. The municipality moved it, in 1857, in St. Michael's Church and brought along the altar perhaps as a substitute for the one used until the secularization and which was sent to the local museum. Its wings contained paintings of the Annunciation (left inside), the Adoration of the Magi (right inside), the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist (left outside) and Evangelist John on the Patmos Island (right outside).

The reredos is almost always open. There are seven saints dressed in golden garments to be seen. In the center stands Mary with the Child Jesus – hence, the concept of a Lady's altar is also used. On the left, is Evangelist John with the cup and on the right, John the Baptist with the lamb. On the inside of the left wing are Barbara and James and on the inside of the right wing, Andrew and Elisabeth of Thüringen. On the back the wings are, on the left, the Visitation and a Nativity scene on the right.

From the first third of the 13th century, the Hildesheim St. Mary's Cathedral has a bronze baptismal font which rests on four water pouring man's figures which symbolize the four paradise rivers. This tradition was also continued after introduction of the Reformation with the 1547 brass baptismal font in a typically Protestant style, for St. Andreas's Church. In Hildesheim and surroundings, a total of six succession works originated, thus about 1592 for the Catholic Holy Cross Church. Last of these baptismal font is the 1618 work by Dietrich Mente for St. Martin's Church, which is, since 1857, in St. Michael's Church. It stands in the northwest transept used as a baptistry.

The basin and its lid show in each case six biblical scenes. On the shaft, the twelve apostles are shown in two rows. The base plate is carried by four cherubs which remind only remotely of the water pouring men in the cathedral's baptismal font. Inscriptions point to the founders and the caster, the cartouche on the lid with St. Martin refers to the original location. The interior of the lid show a representation of the Trinity.

The Organ

In 1958, the church received a 40-stop, 3-manual and pedal organ made by Paul Ott. The instrument was transferred to St. Elizabeth Church in Gera in 1998 where it received a new organcase inaugurated in 2004.

The actual organ was built in 1999 by organbuilder Gerald Woehl, from Marburg. The instrument stands freely in the corner of the southern arm to the west transept, near the northern choir railing. The four-sided organcase presents the basic form of the building, while it is formed as a square put in a corner.

The organ's tonal structure was developed for the performance of a wide range of organ literature: from Johann Sebastian Bach's music and the German romantic music, as well as for the French symphonic organ music and up to contemporary music. The instrument has 69 stops over three manuals and pedal. The manual action as well as the couplings are mechanical while the stop action is electric. The pipework of the Pedal Grossbordun 32' are located beyond the organ; they lie on the first floor of the angel's choir in the southwest transept while the carillon hangs on the choir's higher floor.
